Fun in the sea Org. Uh not so much. There could be good relationships with people who were there. But the day off every other week which is how it was supposed to be became a thing that just didn't happen. There were years where we got maybe 2 days off all year. Vacation with family really only when the family pushed to come to La and visit. Then would get a few days off if u were lucky. Exceptions were supposed day off for sea org day. Possibly Christmas day off. But sometimes even those days would be cancelled. It was really all work. Much of it just busy work.

There is no documentation because there is no money exchanging hands.....they don't pass a plate around & the "ministers" don't own anything. They only things they own are the clothes on their backs & a change of clothes in their bags, a Bible & hymnal...that's it. 💙☮️🙏

Chris, learnt so much interesting, new information from your discussion with John Hunter. I had never heard of heuristics! I see similarities between LGATs and online groups/communities. The online vegan community being one of those. I would be interested in your thoughts on this.

A Brilliant conversation and fits my experience with Landmark. They break you down and then build you up in their image and if it doesn't work for you, you just didn't do it right or you weren't "in the game" and were busy telling yourself "your stories" and "running a racket". And they tell you that you're already "whole and complete". Well, if I'm whole and complete - why am I here? Thank you so so much, Chris and John!

1:39:10 I can totally confirm this - my experience of Landmark was that I felt I was turned into an advertisement for Landmark all the way.... An added component of the "recruitment evening" was that it was impossible to talk to the people sitting next to me outside of the framing of "what is great about landmark" - any other thought other than "all the amazing things I got out of landmark" simply had no room. Add to the delusions that go along with the "hypno-manic" state the concepts of "integrity" and "commitment" - the guests are surrounded only by euphoric voices convincing them to sign up for the course. It really is highly manipulative. 1:43:30 "in an LGAT, you can't really speak to anyone" this is an excellent point, I always felt this contrasted very strongly to the name of the Landmark introductory course "The Forum" that suggests communication between participants. No .. it is the Forum Leader talking at you, you only get to talk in very specific highly controlled contexts. 1:52:30 yes - exactly! This is what Landmark in fact calls "Enrollment" - you talk enthusiastically to your friends and relatives about your newfound possibities (that you have gained from doing the Landmark Course or "participating in the Forum"), and the effect is that people hold you to it and support your lofty goals and intention... so in a way advertising landmark to your friends becomes a psychological bind to the course and the organisation. This interview is really full of excellent analyses -- - I wish it wouldn't take 2h to get through all of it. A sinister aspect of these techniques that e.g. Landmark uses is that they are quite tricky and since they are hidden in language patterns and communication setups but not made explicit (or.. made explicit in witty double-binds like "Entrollment") - most people have no chance to access different perspectives of what is happening to them. One just feels euphoric and light-headed and like "I will probalby learn more about how all this works in the Advanced Course" etc.

Been neglecting this channel lately, but glad I happened to listen to this one. Though it is long it was well worth it - especially for a first conversation it felt really stimulating. Maybe have John Hunter back for convos focusing on some specific mechanism or concept? One I feel gets too little press is Scientology's "success stories" - fabulous way to tie people to a positive narrative of their experience. (Various "course evaluations" that are widely used in quite innocuous circumstances sometimes have that same vibe if they are structured in a certain way.) What other methods are there that do this same thing?

This cycle to build up dopamine is a common 1-view/main purpose process in a lot of organizations, as you both have noted. Are you aware of the process for military basic training? The Army and Navy play this out over 8 weeks; the Air Force (and perhaps the Space Force?), 6 weeks; the Marines have a 13 week schedule that ends with the hellish training at Pais Island. For the Army, there is a 3+3+2 structure. Red: The 1st 3 weeks are the dogging out period, where drill sergeants yell at each recruit the most, picking apart every aspect of every action. White: The 2nd 3 weeks allow some recruit independence; there are more "attaboy" type moments, and the military training continues, and based on perspective, intensifies. Blue: the final 2 weeks build up the team and to some extent the individuals. The idea is to have everyone on board with the army way, ready to work as a team. In war time, most basic training units will go on to AIT (Advanced Individual Training) that focuses on combat, but some recruits may go on to other MOS's (Military occupation Specialties). In peace time, most recruits go to different AITs. There are also differences for those going to office school or perhaps special bands (I fell into the latter category). Of course, any platoon - or company - could be dogged out at any point during basic training, if the drill sergeant(s) think(s) there's good reason for this, but it's unlikely that a platoon will have its flag furled (long story: short - not a good thing) in the Blue period of training. The idea is to graduate confident and cohesive soldiers. sailors, airmen, etc. And LRH? He was a member of the Marine Reserve and Navy Reserve. He figured out how to distill this process to short bursts to con people into being Scientologists and to keep them coming back for more. LRH wasn't the only one to make this kind of connection, but Scientology moves goo gobs of money to keep this going - even if it's limping along at this point.

I definitely see some corporate teambuilding retreats using some practices of LGAT, and they are pitched as mandatory.

LRH knew all about these states. He made sure every person with a good session got sent to the registrar. Like a drug it wears off. So he writes crap about ups and downs and PTS etc. ! Wrong reasons for what one feels like when it wears off. There is no normal in the scientology indoctrination. What a mess he made.

I did a communications class once and the instructor explained that NOT communicating is communicating. Yay! John Hunter! He's brilliant - I had a chance to talk to him directly about my experience with Landmark.

I have come to the conclusion that the "sharing" that is done in LGATs is used as "collateral," by the LGAT, (a la Keith Raniere). They can and will use everything you have shared against you, as leverage. They respect NO boundaries whatsoever.

I grew up in this in the 70s when rules were super strict at least in my family. It was stressful and I believed I was going to hell like at 7 because god was listening to my thoughts. My parents were very strict about rules wearing dresses only, even in winter I hated it so much. I left as a teenager and chose hell over rules

I think that this sect is akin to Jehovah Witnesses and Seven Day Eventist. They all have similar belief(s) systems and the way their leadership structures are set up.. the worldwide church of God was another one. At least, I think that's what they were called..
